iPhone 3GS: Jailbreak is GO!

George Hotz has done it again:

“Yes, this is what you’ve all been waiting for. A jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS. And it’s awesome. To get started right now, go to purplera1n.com. Download it. Make sure you have windows(but not 7), the latest iTunes installed, and an iPhone 3GS with 3.0 firmware. Connect your iPhone normally. Click “make it ra1n”. Wait. On bootup, run Freeze, the purplera1n installer app. Hopefully you’ll figure out what to do from there. Best tutorial gets linked to from purplera1n site. This tool is beta. Make sure to have everything backed up before running. Also if Cydia doesn’t show up after running Freeze, reboot.”

To me the jailbreak is not attractive right now (happy with what the 3GS does out of the box, thank you very much), but I’m sure some of you will appreciate George’s work.

Looks like the unlock is not too far away, either, so if you need that, you might want to hold off with any formware upgrades.

iPhone 1.1.2 / 1.1.3 Software Unlock

From http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com/2008/02/11246unlock-good-enough-for-prize.html:

“So, thats 24hrs to a software unlock; with about 3hrs of sleep in two segments. I am disappointed in the elite/dev team for not finding this; or even looking here. I know not everyone in elite/dev is so closed, and I feel bad for those people. Why don’t we all just share everything? Apple will patch it anyway. They always have the upper hand. And whetever happened to the dev wiki?”

I’m always amazed by the energy these people put into their work. I understand that Apple’s commercial success with the iPhone depends on the money the operators pay them, but the desire by their customers to get around that at least should make them think about other options.

iPhone unlock for 1.1.1 is ready!

Great work:

“Our sincere congratulations, to the iPhone/ iTouch Dev Team for their brilliant work in finding an ingenious way to jailbreak the 1.1.1 system. This exciting news means we are now able to gladly welcome all SIMFREE unlocked phone owners to UPGRADE to 1.1.1 if they so wish

Further to this, we are very proud to announce, (after some very difficult and lengthy hardware hackery), we were able to retrieve the necessary info to create the world first 1.1.1 unlock solution. We have now tested SimFree v1.6 with phones that have the new Baseband version 04.01.13_G with full success. This now means that SimFree v1.6 release, is now capable of completely restoring/repairing software unlocked “bricked” iPhone. Those of you wishing to repair your phone, please read the following steps.”
