iTunes displays -50 error message when syncing iPod

Last week, my iPod started misbehaving. It would sync once, but then disconnect all by itself, and I had no way to configure synchronisation settings.

It took me quite some time to fix it. It had nothing to do with the iPod or iTunes. This was the Apple Knowledge Base article that led me to the solution:

“This symptom may also be caused by software applications which change the appearance of Windows XP. Try deleting or removing any third-party Windows OS skins, Windows themes, or desktop mods that are installed to resolve the iTunes Error -50 issue when syncing your iPod to Windows XP.”

This was when I remembered I had installed Super Tango Patcher the previous week. I uninstalled it, and zzzip – my iPod works fine again.

I still have no idea why iTunes would take issue with that, but who knows how these things interact…

  1. Hmmm..
I just bought one of the new ipod nanos and I'm having this same problem.

The funny thing is, I haven't installed anything like they've specified.

I do however run TinyXP which I think uses a patched version of Microsoft's uxtheme.dll ..

I'll have to see if I can put Microsoft's version back and see if it fixes it.

    I'll let you know.

    Cheers.
