Whatever happened to Mobile Payment?

Yesterday I got an email telling me that the T-Mobile Mobile Wallet Service will end operations 1st of April. No successor service was announced.

To my knowledge, that means that there is currently NO mobile payment service that people can use.

Is that possible? In 2005? Where have all the billion euro investments into mobile payment gone?

Obviously, one of the reasons may be that merchants are not too keen on mobile payments. Why should they – despite the huge number of mobile phone users, all those potential customers do have ways to pay already.

So, where is mCommerce? Where are the mobile services that cry for payment? Surely there must be more than ticketing and ringtones…

Any ideas..? What do I miss?
