Civil disobedience vs. airport security

Now that is a first: I have to disagree with Bruce Schneier.

He says:

“4. I think airline passenger screening is inane. It’s invasive, expensive, time-consuming, and doesn’t make us safer. I think that civil disobedience is a perfectly reasonable reaction.”

Of course there are millions of ways how people can get stuff into the plane anyway, but this makes it a hell of a lot harder, which is the idea. Like virus scanners on PCs – you won’t catch everything, but everything you do catch can’t do wrong anymore.

  1. Yes, but that isn’t the point: the point is “at what cost?” It sounds like you read Schneier regularly, and if so, you’re more than familiar with the idea of security – *all* security – involving trade-offs. Look at the inconveniences, delays, invasions, etc. associated with the screening process. Is it worth the cost? (I don’t know the answer to that, incidentally; as an infrequent flyer it hasn’t appeared on my radar screen.)

We’d all be safer if all these flying bombs were grounded, but no one even considers paying that dear price.
