Interview with the real president

The New Yorker has a long interview with Al Gore. You may remember him – he was the guy who won the popular vote back in 2000 and didn’t get to be president regardless.

He still has his humour, though:

“Put yourself in my position. I flew on Air Force Two for eight years. Now I have to take off my shoes to get on an airplane.”

  1. Not to be picky, but the election in the US is won on the electoral college count, not the popular vote. Gore knew this, yet he chose a strategy that virtually guaranteed his loss — that of campaigning only in the minumum number of states required for a victory. With that strategy, the loss of even one state — in this case, Florida, ends up with a loss of the office. Had he even campaigned in, and won, his HOME STATE of Tennessee, he would have won.

His shortsightedness was a big disappointment to many of his supporters.
