RSS for calendar events?

Marc Canter and Ray Ozzie talk about standardizing RSS for calendar events. Not a bad idea at all. My vision would be to use RSS as a transport mechanism for personalised events, not only calendaring, but notes, VCARDs etc. Add a field for authentication (i.e. a key that allows you to find out if the originator is allowed to send you that type of event), and you can have a personalized RSS stream that you poll for all kinds of events that might be important to you: your secretary sends you a new meeting event, your kids enter their school dates, and online store sends you a link with FedEx tracking data – and whatever else you may think of.
Adding authentication would make RSS the ultimate communication tool, SPAM free, too.
