Apple’s DRM

So, you’re a major computer manufacturer and wanting to release an online music store. Negotiations with the record labels won’t happen without you promising to use DRM, but you know DRM is pointless and unwanted. What do you do?
You make it really easy to copy tracks anyway, or burn them to disc and re-rip. Whatever. The point is, all these people complaining about the Apple DRM are missing the point. The DRM isn’t meant for you – it’s meant for the negotiation table. For you, if you look carefully, Apple are winking and subtley pointing at the places you can break it. Shhhh! Don’t tell the RIAA… Shhhh! (Pity the poor iTunes team, getting all this flack and not being able to point this out.) [via Ben Hammersley.com]
