Getting your classic menu back in Microsoft Office 2007

Posted by Frank Koehntopp as Blogging

Welcome back!

I recently bought Microsoft Office 2007 Home and Student, which of course introduces Microsoft’s stupidest UI *ever*. As a natural reaction, my wife has been giving me hell for weeks “I want the old menu back!” (to Microsoft: fire your UI test lab, just put it on your home PCs and record the reaction of your spouses!).

I found several add-ins that claim to bring the old menu back, here’s one that’s free for non-commercial use: http://www.ubit.ch/software/ubitmenu-office2007/

Even though my screen shot is german, UBitMenu is available in many languages.

Now I only need someone to tell me how I can make this the only menu visible, so I don’t have to switch to it in order to see it. Surely there’s a way…?

  • The reason why UBitMenu does not hide the ribbon is, that many of the new functions have a better useability in the ribbon. If you use UBitMenu you have the best out of two worlds and you can play with the new functions, whenever you are not under stress. I personally think that Word 2007 is the best Word since good old DOS Word 2.0. But there is still a long way to go...

They say that you get used to the new UI.

I've tried it several weeks, even with this extension, but no chance. Finally I kicked Office-2007 (sold it on Ebay) and switched back to Office-2003.
