Twitter to SMS link – where are the operators?

Posted by Frank Koehntopp as Blogging

Welcome back!

Twitter provides an interface to send tweets to your mobile phone as text messages.

Wouldn’t it be a great service offering for a mobile operator to allow you to maintain your Twitter ID and then send you incoming text messages as DM in Twitter?

The infrastructure required to do that would be rather small, but the marketing potential would be huge (remember that guy @BarackObama…? ).

What do you think – good idea or not? @silentpenguin, while you’re in Milan… ;)

Do you still get tweets directly to your phone in Germany? That's long-gone in the UK... having my texts go to Twitter scares me a bit. Somehow I trust my mobile operator more than Twitter and anyone else who can access Twitter's infrastructure.

I'm amazed that no mobile operator has done something about offering Twitter to text updates though, for a small price each month. There are a large number of users out there (even just in the UK), it would benefit Twiiter & the mobile operator, and it's practically money for old rope.
