AllAboutSymbian: Sendo X review

Ewan has posted a massive Sendo X review on AllAboutSymbian. Read it!

Now that’s actually the first Symbian phone that looks more like a phone than like a design study. The possibility of firmware updates via the included USB cable makes this something worth looking at closer.

Who’s copying who

Yesterday, I had a good laugh at Apple’s WWDC banners accusing Microsoft of stealing Apple’s ideas.

But one day after WWDC, this isn’t so funny anymore. Actually it looks like Apple’s the one doing the copying. It started with Watson, now they have a new OS feature in MacOS X v10.4 Tiger called “Dashboard“. This looks eerily similar to Konfabulator. So similar, that that similarity is the talk of the web today: Russ is mad about it, MacMinute has the story, the author himself claims they’re copying, and vowe covers it as well.

Steve, maybe you should have a talk with the original developer. That’s a bad signal for independent developers, on which you rely heavily. That’s not how we want Apple to be. It’s bad enough that there’s this other company who acts like thieves.

Why people still use IE

Jeff Nolan would like to switch to Firefox, but says it’s just too much of a hassle:

“my friend Pravin is always trying to get me to use Firefox, which I did for a while (love the tabbed browsing interface). But it’s just too much of a PITA to figure out how to make all my regular sites (like SAP’s internal network) work on it. So I’m back on IE, despite the security risks.”

I guess that’s a problem many of us have. There’s still too many web designers out there who design for IE, then shrug when being told that their site won’t work on other browsers. They *know* that people most likely have IE installed on their machines, even if they use a different browser by default.

Users, on the other site, *will* use IE if they want access to a particular site. SAP is a good example, as all of their sites (service.sap.com, sdn.sap.com etc.) are next to inaccessible with any other browser.

Here’s a message to SAP: if you’re serious about security, I hope you have re-writing your IE pages on the to do list!

Please stop protecting me!

Heiko Hebig is annoyed that US subcsription rates for magazines are WAY lower than german ones, one of the reasons being that consumer protection acts make it impossible for german companies to make huge discounts.

The same thing happened only recently when Apple announced that the iTunes Music Store co-operation with Pepsi would also start in germany, amongst other countries. With one difference: in the US, you can get a song per bottle, in germany you need to collect tokens from 4 bottles to get one song.

You guessed it – there’s a law prohibiting making gifts with purchases that surpass a certain percentage of the good’s value.

Stop it, please. We can care for ourselves.

Samsung i600 Review by Jim Louderback

(Via Jim and MobileWhack:)

“The cheerfully clueless rep presents me with two options that I quickly dub “Pricing Plans for Dummies: all the data I can eat for $79 a month” and “150 megabytes for $99 a month.”

“Do you sell a lot of the $99 plans?” I ask. “Not really,” he responds, in that baffled way sort of reminiscent of overpaid relief pitchers and drunk rednecks. ”

I just had to blog that quote ;)

I’m afraid I’m not as adventurous as Jim Louderback and will stay away from Windows phones for a while. The review mentions all the problems I expected, and that’s simply too much.

Spotting Air Marshals

From the San Francisco Chronicle:

“In an era when “dressing down” is the traveler’s creed, air marshals must show up in jackets and ties, hair cut short, bodies buffed, shoes shined.

Jack Webb would be proud, but the marshals say they stand out like shampooed show dogs among the pound pups.”

Now there’s a good example how *not* to increase security. There’s no limit no human stupidity.

Functional email addresses

(Via Ideengeberin.de:) Now there’s a good idea – in your email signature, make sure you have a personal email address as well as a functional one.

That way, people can make sure they reach somebody to do the job in case you’re not there. Just make sure the functional email address gets read/distributed ;)

Euro 2004

Ok, we lost. The boys are going to come home. The coach has resigned.

I hope that will not just be it – two years to go to the world cup – learn from Euro 2004, and build a fresh team around the ‘youngsters’ (who definitely played better than the ‘experienced’ players…). Get Timo Hildebrand into the team (hey, 885 minutes without a goal – he should be up to the job!) and find a leader on the field. Then there may be hope.

But then again, what do I know about soccer…
